What is a Solid State Relay (SSR)?
A solid state relay (SSR) is an electronic component that switches power (current) to a load circuit and provides electrical isolation between an application's control circuit and load circuit. It is a competing technology for electromechanical relays and other switching technologies.
Why use solid state relays?
Long Life: Solid State Relays have no moving parts. Therefore, there is no mechanical wear on the output contacts. The typical lifespan of solid state relays can be over 50 times longer than electromechanical relays. Great for repeated applications.
Quiet Operation: Solid State Relays produce no noise when the output contacts change state. This is very desirable in many commercial applications.
Minimal electrical noise: Zero-voltage turn-on and zero-current turn-off minimize electrical interference from the SSR.
Low Power Consumption: Solid State Relays require very little power "coil current" to switch large loads.
Shock and Vibration Resistant: Solid State Relays are less prone to unstable or unreliable operation when operating in harsh environments.
Ideal for Harsh Environments: Solid State Relays will not spark or arc and will not bounce back electrically or mechanically. Magnetic fields have little effect on SSR.
High compatibility with control systems: DC-controlled SSRs can be switched on and off by digital systems such as PLC and μC-based systems and digital systems. AC Controlled SSRs can be driven by limit switches, thermal switches and sensors carrying AC control signals. Microcontroller-based SSRs allow networking.
Fast Switching: Randomly on solid state relays respond to control signals in less than 100µs. Phase control and burst control can be easily implemented to provide accurate AC power control.
Position Insensitive: Suitable for installation in vertical or horizontal positions, "dead bug" positions, adjacent installations.
Solid State Relay Applications
Although solid state relays have thousands of individual uses, most can be grouped into the following applications:
heating control
This includes the largest segment of solid state relay customers. Applications include, but are not limited to: specialty food equipment, plastic forming/extrusion machinery, HVAC&R and welding equipment.
Advantages: temperature accuracy, long life, maintenance-free, product safety, and convenient interface. Suitable for compressor soft start, heater, fan, blower and valve control.
lighting control
These applications generally fall into three categories: theatrical, warehouse, and commercial. Many products used in this segment are designed for specific applications.
Advantages: dimming, silent operation, fast switching, long life, maintenance free, safe product, easy interface, reduced parts count.
sport control
Includes elevators, lifts, lifts, fitness equipment, conveyor systems, solenoid valves and valve controls.
Advantages: Durable, shock and vibration resistant, soft start, reverse rotation, arc free, fast switching, long life, maintenance free, easy interface, reduced parts count.
