What is a timing relay?

A timer relay, after its coil is energized, periodically changes the state of its contacts. Typically, the period of time the contacts can remain closed or open is externally adjustable, and the cycle period can vary from a few milliseconds to hundreds of hours. The number of controlled contacts and the cycle period depend on the design of the timer.

How do timer relays work?

The working principle of the timing relay is as follows:

• First, apply supply voltage to the timer relay.

• Second, the microprocessor starts to boot.

• In the next step, the microprocessor reads the information from the interface. The interface consists of different adjustment possibilities on the front of the timer. The time function, time range and fine-tuning of the desired delay time must be set via rotary switches and potentiometers.

• In the fourth step, the microprocessor reads the information of the control input, eg, the control input used to start the delay. This information from the timer is used to start the action and is called the "start pulse" or "trigger".

• Now the timer starts working.

• After completion of the selected time delay, output relay energy/deoxidation.

• When the output relay is energized, the load current acts like a contactor to power the connected equipment.

Timer relay type

Timer relays offer a wide range of optional features so that users can customize their specific machine operation. Timer relays have many timing functions. Some of them are:

Delay timer relay

When the supply voltage is applied and the delay time expires, the output contacts change position. (for example, a fan starts working) and when the supply voltage fails, the output contacts return to the first position. (fan stops)

Turn off delay timer relay

When supply voltage is applied, the output contacts change position. (eg the fan starts working immediately) but when the supply voltage fails, the output contacts return to the first position within a defined time. (The fan continues to work within the specified time)

Multifunction Timer Relay

The multi-function time relay is a timer with multiple timing functions. Different control functions can be selected and applied using the multi-function timer. It is ideal for many applications from basic to industrial control.
